Marsabit National Park is a forested mountain which rises from the middle of an expansive desert. It has three crater lakes with a myriad of birdlife. One of the Kenya's most famous elephant, Ahmed, who boasted of the biggest tusks ever recorded was a resident of this area. Ahmed was decreed a protected animal at the height of poaching war in 1970 by the Presidential Order of President Jomo Kenyatta. Ahmed died of natural causes at the age of 55. His body was preserved and is now on display in Nairobi national Museum. Other game which can be seen here include the Buffalo, caracal, Greater Kudu, bushback and Reticulated Giraffe. Different species of butterflies live here. Some of the birds which can be seen here include the rare Lammergeyer Vulture, the rare Masked Lark, Somali Ostrich and a good number of raptor species. |
