Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon, the second highest mountain in Kenya lies astride the Kenya Uganda border. The area is thickly forested with Giant podo trees, Giant groundsel, Elgon teak, lobelia Juniper, and thick bamboo thickets. Mount Elgon National park is to the eastern slopes. It is one of the Kenya's beautiful parks but also one of the least visited. At the slopes of Mount Elgon are the unique and exciting caves where Elephants, Buffalo, Duiker and Bushbacks go underground in search of licking salt which is rare in the surrounding soils. This is in fact the only known place in the world where game like Elephants go underground. Leopard and Hyena go hunting in these caves. Thousands of bats and rock hyrax also live in these caves. The magnificent Lammergeier, or bearded Vulture is also found around this area.
